Are You Sitting There Staring at Your Twitter Page Wondering How Do I Get More Twitter Followers?

twitter-followers This article will take you through step by step on how to get more twitter followers and grow your social media presence (keep in mind this is not a cheap and fast method to get twitter followers. This is a way to build a real community on Twitter that will provide tremendous value in the long term).

Note: A large Twitter following can have zero value. How? If you never engage with your community or if you’ve purchased fake followers. In both situations, your tweets will fall on blind eyes. Use the tips in this article to create a real community. A community of evangelists.

Fill Out Your Bio and Add an Image

This is basic stuff.I didn’t even want to add this to the guide but just in case you’re one of the few people who haven’t done this yet please go do it. Upload a proper image (a headshot works best or a logo if you want to represent your brand) and fill in your bio with some useful information to help people determine if they should follow you or not.

Follow The Right People

Spend your time targeting the right people to follow. If you’re just pressing the follow button without any rhyme or reason then you’re wasting your time. Be specific on who you follow. There is no rush to a million followers if those million people don’t care about what you have to say. Those million people will represent a tremendous amount of wasted time and money. Be smart. Follow people who matter to you.

Are you now wondering how to follow the right people?
Use a twitter tool (like Tweepi or ManageFlitter) to do a keyword search for a word or phrase that is specific to your industry. Tweepi just came out with a “search by user” feature that allows you to search user bios, locations and profiles based on keywords. Find people who are talking about what you’re interested in. These are the people you want to start following.

Here comes the part where you can’t get lazy. Engage the people you follow by answering questions they may have or start a conversation with them. Start building real relationships. Maybe they won’t become a client but it’s possible that over time they’ll know someone who might. Keep a list of the people you engage with (using a social CRM tool like Nimble) and check in with them every so often. It’s all about building a community one person at a time.

Keep Track Of Your Brand & Industry

Keeping track of your brand & industry is one of the best ways to grow your following. The more active you are engaging with potential clients/customers the more likely they’ll follow you and tell their friends to do the same. In order to do all this you’re going to need some help.

A great way to keep track of your brand on Twitter is to use the right tools! Check out these tools below and see which one fits best for you.

2. Hootsuite- Social Media Management

Be Interesting With Your Tweets

To be honest, there are too many people on Twitter who are boring and provide very little value to their followers. You don’t want to be one of these people. You want your brand to stand out so you need to provide valuable content day in and day out. Go out and explore the internet world and find blogs and news sources that cover your industry. Subscribe to their RSS feed or newsletters to stay on top of their latest articles. Set up a Google news alert with topics that you’re interested in so that you can be one of the first to tweet about a breaking story.

Important: You don’t want to be a person/brand that only tweets content created by others. If you don’t have a blog yourself to tweet your own content, then you need to make sure you have an opinion/comment attached to your tweets. It’s okay to have an opinion, just make sure it stays consistent with your brand message.

Be Consistent

Nobody wants to follow someone that tweets once a week. Twitter is all about being part of the community on a consistent basis. If you commit to a twitter presence with your brand then you should be prepared to engage consistently. There may be times when someone is publicly being negative about you or your brand. You need to get involved in the conversation and right the ship as best you can. Always control the message of your brand. If you’re not talking about your brand on social media then someone else will do it for you.

ReTweets Are Great!

Looking to say thanks to a fellow tweep? Want to let someone know that you really enjoyed their latest blog post? Retweet their tweet. It’s simple to do and it’s a great way to get that person’s attention because when you retweet them that person gets a notification about it.

For example if I wanted to retweet my friend Gerry’s tweet about his Social Studmuffin Radio Show then I would just simply click the retweet link shown. Easy as that.

The rules of Unfollowing

It’s okay to unfollow people on Twitter. You won’t end up liking everyone you follow. Sometimes you click the follow button with good intentions and then all of a sudden your stream is overwhelmed with this person’s spam or just tweets that don’t interest you. Don’t feel bad for unfollowing them. They’re preventing you from being as productive as possible. Say goodbye.

You can check out Just Unfollow if you’re looking for a tool to help you unfollow people quickly.

#HashTags

Hashtags have been around for awhile but as Twitter grows so does the understanding and acceptance of hashtags. Hashtags are just ways to categorize your tweets by using a “#” sign in front of the topic. For example if I wanted to tweet about one of my previous articles on Facebook I could tweet something like: “How Do I Get More Facebook Likes? bit.ly/138bClY #Facebook” Facebook is the category/topic in this tweet. People who are interested in Facebook may be following the hashtag #Facebook and see your tweet and start following you.

Buying Followers

Buying followers is the worst way to grow your following. The followers you get are either fake or comprise of people who have no interest in you or what you have to tweet about. With applications like Fakers anyone can search your twitter handle to see if you have purchased twitter followers. It’s not worth it.
